Europe vs The States: Weston McKennie’s MLS Rumor Causes A Divide

Weston Mckennie

One of the reasons football is called “The Beautiful Game” is the many ways that it has brings excitement to its fans. Last minute goals, derby wins, jaw dropping free kicks, unpredictable upsets, are just few examples. On June 20th, I found another as an FC Cincinnati fan. I would login to twitter to see that my home team had a stunning transfer link to my favorite USMNT player, Weston McKennie, from the Italian giant Juventus FC.

At first, I thought the rumor was bogus. This is a great player still developing as he enters his prime years. Weston is coming off a mixed season with Juventus. He made 35 appearances in Serie A, contributing five goals and three assists from the midfield and securing the teams 15th Coppa Italia. Despite facing stiff competition for a starting spot and dealing with a few injuries, McKennie showed his versatility by playing in multiple midfield roles. His energetic style, ball-winning ability, and knack for getting forward into attacking positions was a valuable asset for the Bianconeri during the second half of the season. However, with Juventus undergoing tactical shifts with a new coach among other squad changes, McKinnie’s role has become less defined, leading to increased speculation about his future.

McKennie is also rumored to be on the radar of several European clubs. Teams from the Premier League, Bundesliga, and La Liga have all reportedly expressed interest. Clubs like Tottenham Hotspur and Borussia Dortmund have been mentioned as potential suitors, considering McKinnie’s dynamic style and proven track record in top European leagues. These rumors indicate that while an MLS move is a possibility, staying in Europe remains a viable and attractive option for the midfielder.

The rumors have caused a divide among many USMNT fans on social media as well as on network football programs such as CBS Sports. Fans are split between wanting McKennie to stay in Europe to develop with Europe being seen as the global top standard for the sport. He will be a key player internationally with the World Cup 2026 in America quickly approaching and playing weekly against the best players would prepare him for the big show in a few years.

MLS fans argue that while that is a good case, a move to MLS would also be great move. Showing that the league is growing and attractive to stars to play on home turf while also being a good development league to be able to perform on the international stage well too.

Pros of Moving to MLS

  1. Increased Playing Time: Moving to FC Cincinnati could provide McKennie with more consistent playing time, helping him with form and confidence.
  2. Leadership Role: As one of the league’s top talents, McKennie would likely take on a leadership role, enhancing his experience and visibility.
  3. Home Comfort: Returning to the US could benefit McKennie personally, offering a familiar environment and less cultural adjustment.

Cons of Moving to MLS

  1. Level of Competition: The overall quality and intensity of MLS is generally lower than that of top European leagues, which might impact McKinnie’s development and sharpness.
  2. USMNT Impact: Playing in a less competitive league could potentially affect his form and readiness for international duties with the USMNT, if not his selection.

Pros of Staying in Europe

  1. High-Level Competition: Remaining in Europe means McKennie would continue to compete against some of the best players in the world, which is crucial for his development.
  2. Exposure and Prestige: Staying with a high-profile club in a top league maintains McKinnie’s status as a player in one of the world’s elite competitions, keeping him in the spotlight for both club and country.

Cons of Staying in Europe

  1. Limited Playing Time: If McKennie stays at a club where he isn’t a regular starter, it could hinder his development and match readiness.
  2. Transfer Uncertainty: Continual transfer speculation can be destabilizing and might affect his focus and performance on the pitch.

Weston just finished playing in the Copa America after a disappointing exit with the USMNT. I’m sure he will take some time to weigh his options and get rest. This means that this transfer rumor will remain for a few more weeks and will continue to be a hot topic debate among many.

As for me, I am siding with the fans that want to see McKennie stay in Europe. I loved seeing Weston making an impact at Juventus and I believe at a new, stable European club, he has the potential to make an even bigger impact. I will continue to watch him at whatever team he goes to next. Luckily for me, I am an FCC fan which leaves this debate as a win-win situation for me.
