From Houston to the World: Bryan Salas’ Screwston FC Movement

Houston has a deep history in music and sport. From local legends like Beyonce, Travis Scott, and Megan thee Stallion, to the winning culture of teams like the Astros, Rockets and Texans, the lore runs deep. Soccer in Houston is no different, with various musical collaborations with the Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash – teams that have had their own share of success. To honor that history, and build a still-growing soccer culture in Houston, that’s where Screwston FC comes in. Ahead of the brand’s 2025 drop, Forty-One got to talk to founder Bryan Salas about its past, present and future.
41: What inspired you to create Screwston FC?
BS: Screwston FC is a passion project that began in 2020, when I had more time to focus on developing this brand. It’s rooted in the hip hop culture of Houston, specifically in the legacy of DJ Screw, and it’s a nod to our H-Town subculture—those of us who take pride in being screwheads and who are deeply connected to the spirit of this city. The crest is inspired DJ Screw’s 3 ‘N The Mornin’ album cover.

Similar projects have emerged abroad in Europe and through pop-ups in cities like NYC and LA, but I wanted to show that down here in Screwston, we have our own interpretation of soccer.
How did your experience living in Houston help inform the purpose behind the brand?
I’m not originally from Houston—I was born in Mexico and moved here when I was 9 years old—I’ve lived in the east side of Houston, not far from where DJ Screw started selling tapes. Our first home was an apartment complex, and one of my memories from when we were kids is after school, would meet up with others and play pick-up games in the street. Cars would drive by or park nearby, blasting Screw. That’s how the game and the music became intertwined in my upbringing. I’ve been a fan of both the sport and the H-Town movement ever since.

And using that background and history, how were you able to convey that to Houston natives and soccer fans alike?
I believe that those personal experiences resonate with others, and there’s a similarity that we can all share. Houstonians are extremely proud of our city, we hold it down for Houston in everything we do. For me, one of the ways I do that is by creating something cool that represents our city in a dope way.

How would you describe the impact Screwston FC has made to Houston’s soccer community so far?
Since 2021, we’ve launched two jerseys and are gearing up for our third. It’s been dope to see how this project has grown, and I’m having a good time expressing the intersection of soccer, our city, and our culture. Everything I do for Screwston FC is intentional and meaningful—there’s no rush, and it’s all about creating for the love of it. It’s also been incredible connecting with the community.
Speaking of the upcoming jersey drop, what are some details that stand out from past iterations?

The third jersey, it’s special because it features our first original pattern. In the past, I worked with purple Adidas blanks and customized them to make them our own, this time we teamed up with KitandBone, a manufacturer and jersey designer, to create something unique.

As the brand continues to evolve and grow, what do you want people to think of Screwston FC?
What I hope people take away from Screwston FC is the importance of creating for the fun of it and showing love for your city. It’s about putting something out there that represents where you’re from, sharing it with the world, and just giving things a try.
The 2025 Screwston FC jersey is available now on the brand’s site.
