The Masters, golf’s most prestigious tournament in the United States, concluded this past weekend in dramatic fashion, with Rory McIlroy battling back for a Grand Slam-clinching victory. The Masters has long been the pride of Augusta, Georgia, where the tournament has been held since its inception. While Augusta is known for golf in the sports world, the city does has space for the beautiful game to thrive.

Enter The Augusta Soccer Team, which joined 4th-tier league United Premier Soccer League in July 2024. The team is currently in the midst of its inaugural season, which began only just last month and has already started on the right foot: So far, they have netted 2 wins and 1 loss. The team hopes to make an impact on the city of Augusta at the end of their 10 game campaign in June, in more ways than one.

AST’s goal for the Augusta community and the Central Savannah River Area is to purchase a plot of real estate downtown and convert it into public soccer fields. This would be Richmond County’s only publicly accessible soccer field, highlighting a glaring lack of access that the AST’s leadership is determined to address. Citing the need to increase involvement in the CSRA, the program aims to provide young players with an easily accessible outlet to nurture their love of the game.

So if you ever find your way to Augusta for The Masters, or looking for an alternative to the annual tradition, be sure to watch an Augusta Soccer Team match in the meantime.
